What the stamp means

On the date printed, that license number showed as active (CLEAR) in the Contractors State License Board's public license file. It's a checked fact, with a date on it.

It isn't a gold star, a rating, or a promise about workmanship. If a license lapses or gets suspended, the stamp comes off at the next refresh.

Every listing links to CSLB's own lookup so you can double-check it in a minute.

Browse by trade

Each trade maps to the CSLB license class that legally covers the work, so "roofer" means a C-39, not a guess. Counts are active licenses with a California address.

How this directory works

I check the license and lay out the facts. You do the hiring.

No rankingsNo best-of listsNo pay-to-winNo fake reviews

Everybody licensed is here

Every contractor in CSLB's public license file with an active license gets a free listing. Nobody applies to get in, and nobody pays to stay.

License Verified is a fact

Each listing shows the date of the CSLB file it was checked against. If a license lapses, the stamp comes off.

Featured means paid

Featured spots are ads, labeled "Ad" every time, with at most 2 per page. Paying never buys the stamp or a better spot in the list.

Always check it yourself

Look the license up at cslb.ca.gov before you sign, and ask for proof of insurance. It takes two minutes.

Listings come from CSLB's public license file. Lists are always in a stated neutral order (A–Z by business name). A Featured label means the business paid for placement. How it works in detail →

Before you hire

The short checklist. Full guide →

  1. Get the license number and look it up at CSLB yourself. In California, work of $1,000 or more (labor and materials), any job that needs a building permit, or any job where workers are hired requires a licensed contractor.
  2. Match the class to the job. A C-39 for a roof, a C-36 for plumbing. A B general builder can take a stand-alone roofing or plumbing job only if it also holds that specialty license or subcontracts it.
  3. Check workers' comp. Roofing (C-39), HVAC (C-20), concrete (C-8), asbestos abatement (C-22) and tree service (D-49) licensees must carry it even with no employees.
  4. Keep the down payment small: for home improvement, no more than 10% of the contract price or $1,000, whichever is less.
  5. Ask who's selling. Salespeople for home improvement contractors must hold their own CSLB Home Improvement Salesperson (HIS) registration.

Why I built this

California licenses a couple hundred thousand active contractors, and the state publishes the record for every one of them for free. But most of us never look, and the big lead sites aren't built for looking.

So here's the deal. Every licensed contractor gets listed. I print the date I checked each license. Ads look like ads. Nobody gets ranked. You make the call.

Is it free to search?

Yes. Searching is free for homeowners and always will be.

Do you rank or recommend companies?

No. Lists are A–Z by business name. Ads never change that order.

What does License Verified mean?

On the date shown, the license was active (CLEAR) in CSLB's public file. It doesn't vouch for quality or insurance.

How did my business get listed?

Every active CSLB license is listed from the public file. Claim your listing for free.

Should I still check the license myself?

Yes, every time, at cslb.ca.gov. Then ask for insurance certificates.
